At International Risk we recognize that in today's e-business environment ninety percent or more of data is stored electronically and even paper files likely originated from a computer system. As a result, the collection of available evidence to support a fraud investigation or to resolve other corporate integrity issues will be incomplete and important evidence may be missed unless appropriate efforts are made to locate, protect, retrieve and analyze the potential evidence that may reside on computer systems.
Computer data is fragile and can easily be lost or contaminated if searches for potential electronic evidence are not undertaken using forensically-sound procedures because merely turning on a computer may cause changes to critical data. Searching for potential evidence in computer systems can be like searching for the proverbial 'needle in a haystack' unless special data mining tools are used.
International Risk has the tools and the experience to help companies and their legal advisors locate, protect, retrieve and analyze computer-based data.
Data Forensics
Data forensics describes a methodology used in the search, seizure and analysis of computer-based evidence to assist in its later acceptability in a court of law. The data forensics techniques utilized by International Risk are consistent with those used by international law enforcement agencies and have been accepted by the courts in most jurisdictions.
International Risk data forensic specialists utilize software tools and procedures that assure potential electronic evidence is not contaminated in the seizure process. We take a mirror-image copy of the hard-drive, email server or other potential electronic evidence source to preserve the evidential integrity of the original data. Interruption to business is minimal: hardware does not need to be removed and imaging can, if required and provided access is legally obtained, be undertaken covertly in a manner so as not to alert possible suspects.
Wrongdoers consistently attempt to delete incriminating material, including email communications, from their computers. International Risk data forensic procedures image the whole hard-drive or other electronic media - including those areas where deleted material may reside - and deleted material can often be recovered.
Our analytical tools and investigative experience allows us to locate potential evidence, often including evidence that a suspect has sought to delete or conceal.
Electronic evidence recovery is thus a key investigative tool in the successful resolution of allegations of fraud, corruption, malfeasance, theft of proprietary material and other suspected impropriety.
Our electronic evidence recovery capabilities have also assisted clients in the discovery process of litigation and in the development of evidence to show the extent of software counterfeiting operations.
CyberCrime Investigations
In addition to electronic evidence recovery, International Risk has extensive experience in the investigation of other computer crime issues. These include:
- Hacking incidents and other unauthorized intrusion
into computer systems;
- Tracing of harassing, threatening and defamatory
email;
- Investigations into the distribution of pirated
software, films and music via the Internet.
